Bakeware

What are the different types of bakeware materials?

The most common materials for bakeware are hard-anodised aluminium, stainless steel, carbon steel, and silicone.

Hard-anodised aluminium: Hard-anodised aluminium cookware is made through an electrochemical process to fuse aluminium with a non-stick coating. When aluminium is anodised, it becomes 30% harder than stainless steel.

Stainless steel: Stainless steel’s resistance to rust is enabled by the presence of chromium in the alloy, which forms a passive film that protects the underlying material from corrosion.

Carbon steel: Carbon steel is a special type of steel that, as the name suggests, has a higher concentration of carbon than other types of steel. Carbon steel is ultra-resistant and durable.

Silicone: Silicone is a synthetic material with non-stick properties and is used in many of our tools and accessories. It is heat resistant and easy to clean. We do not recommend silicone baking trays as they tend to be unstable.

How do I clean my baking pans?

We recommend using a mixture of soap, baking soda, and hot water. Scrub the pans to remove the stains. If it doesn’t come off instantly you can let it soak in hot water for a few hours before scrubbing it.

Does the thickness of the pans matter?

A thicker pan has more distance between the cooking surface and the heat source. By the time the heat flows to the cooking surface, it will have spread out evenly, because heat diffuses as it flows. Thick pans are better for heat retention.

What is the recommended temperature for baking pans?

Even if our pans have been tested to 260°C, we recommend keeping them at 230°C.

Why is it important Baker's Secret pans are BPA, PTFE, PFOA, and Cadmium free?

There are a number of health concerns related to the use of these products in food preparation. BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical that is commonly used in the production of plastic products, and has been linked to reproductive problems and cancer. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) are chemicals used in the production of non-stick coatings, and have also been linked to cancer, developmental problems, and liver damage. Cadmium is a heavy metal that can accumulate in the body over time and has been linked to kidney disease and other health concerns.

BPA, PTFE, PFOA, and Cadmium are all known to have negative impacts on the environment, with some of them being persistent pollutants that can accumulate in the environment and harm wildlife.

Is the Baker's Secret coating safe?

Baker’s Secret coating is perfectly safe for use under normal usage. Please refer to the instructions included with each product.

My bakeware is scratched, can I still use it?

Baker’s Secret uses the highest quality non-stick coating material and applies it to the pans with the highest standard of production and quality control. In any case that the coating is consumed accidentally if the coat is broken or pilled (by scratch, or otherwise) it will go away from the body without being absorbed and so it is non-toxic and safe for “consumption”. For better release results it is better to replace pans with deep scratches. Hand washing with non-abrasive sponges is recommended.
